Inspired by the ancient subterranean kingdom of Moria, also known as Khazad-dm, from J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, this one-of-a-kind edged creation is part modern relic, part metallic sculpture, and all tool. Forged at the hands of James Oatley at his Sydney, Australia studio, the otherworldly work of functional art is shaped from James’ own homemade steel formula that infuses layer of pure copper into high-carbon steel to form both blade and the handle’s frame. As though having emerged from the depths of Khazad-dm’s vast, Middle-earth complex of tunnels, chambers, halls, and mines beneath the Mistry Mountains, the knife’s handle is completed with a series of hammered copper pins of varying proportions.
