A chef’s knife with close to 100-million years of history is not one you come across every day. Then again, artist Fingal Ferguson’s culinary creations are never your ordinary cup of tea. This one in particular, though, has a story to tell: inlaid in the handle is a piece of stabilized dinosaur bone, one which previously belonged to a Spinosaurus, the spinosaurid terrestrial carnivore, before it perished in what now is North Africa during the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period. Lending its legacy to this one-of-a-kind tool, we thank and honor the Spinosaurus in question for its contribution to contemporary cooking. Matching the unique beauty of the handle’s headlining material is a versatile and dynamic blade in a steel every bit as jaw-dropping: Damasteel’s san mai Hakkapella Damacore stainless damascus, which Fingal has given a high polish sheen contrasted by dark etch to produce a striking visual effect. At 115mm / 4.5″ long and 44mm tall at the heel, it will excel at a wide variety of cuts around the kitchen, compact and precise enough for refined slicing and detail work with the thin, sharp edge and slim, pointed tip, and tall enough for quick chopping work in even the tightest of spaces. To control the handsome blade and highlight the ancient Cretaceous handle ingredient are two pieces of black G10, cross-cut for the bulk of the grip to produce a wonderful, tactile feel and visual texture, and traditionally cut (ie. smoother) in front. Completing the work of functional art are two rings of polished nickel silver jacketing the bone, and an elegant mosaic pin at the handle’s end.
