A unique and very special delivery has arrived in this mesmerizing blade from Joseph Schrum, designer and craftsman behind Halcyon Forge of Missouri. For the first damascus of its kind from his shop, and the first canister damascus in seven years, Joe combined thousands of 1/8″ 52100 ball bearings with 4800KC carbon steel powder to form a jaw-dropping pattern with incredible contrast in which droplets of steel seem to float, mingle, and bend atop a surface of satin. Mid-height bevels with superb convexity lead to a very thin and long, 238mm / 9.4″ edge in a profile offering a straight stretch beginning at the 55mm tall heel for big cuts, and ample belly as the edge sweeps upward to the tip for a wide variety of daily kitchen tasks. Balancing just shy of an inch in front of the choil, this blade is weighted and steady in the hand, providing excellent cutting performance for long, precise slices, up-down chopping, and even detail work with its paper-thin tip and finely honed, near-zero edge. This one-of-a-kind object’s build is completed with a smooth, oval, wa-style handle of Ukranian bog oak that features a ring of stabilized mammoth tooth with beautiful details. Comfortable to handle and easy to look at, this knife gives the term ‘fine, functional art’ a new meaning.
