Austrian artist Benjamin Kamon’s contribution to The Art of Cutlery, a matching pair of chef knives named “Apex & Abyss,” on show during summer 2024 in Tribeca, NYC, highlights the extraordinary degree of precision and care required to produce a technically and aesthetically superb culinary tool of the caliber expected of today’s top artisans. While each is forged from the same carbon steel alloy and dressed with the same ancient bog oak and copper, Apex is crafted meticulously, from its edge geometry to handle fit-and-finish and everything in between, while Abyss, although still functional, misses the mark ever so slightly in every aspect. Renowned for his high-performance kitchen cutlery, Mr. Kamon is especially well positioned to highlight the infinite nuances of a craft on which he has made such a mark. Displayed in visual opposition to one another on a uniquely forged iron and copper stand, the striking contrast is further emphasized with the mirrored presentation.
